John Campbell (born 1944) is the acting director of the Office of the Historian within the Department of State. He was appointed to the position in June 2009.〔(State Department Inspector General Issues Report on the Office of the Historian ), National Coalition for History Blog, 5 June 2009; accessed 7 June 2009.〕 Campbell had previously served as United States Ambassador to Nigeria. He was appointed by President George W. Bush and served from May 20, 2004 to November 1, 2007. He was succeeded by Robin R. Sanders. Campbell previously served as Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of Human Resources at the State Department. His numerous overseas postings include service as a political counselor in Nigeria in the late 1980s and in South Africa in the mid 1990s during the transition from apartheid to majority rule. Born in Washington, D.C., Campbell earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts from the University of Virginia and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin in 1970. ==References==
